Golf Mk 4 --better off buying an Astra

2002 Volkswagen Golf Diesel Manual Hatchback by bob roberts • 28th April 2012
I bought a 2002 Golf 1.6s with 70K on it. I paid what appeared to be the market value £1700.
The car is very heavy on petrol and running costs are high. The ride is fine, good confortable driving seat with adjustable stearing. The model has a number of well known and documented faults (which i didnt research before purchasing) - the most worrying of which is problems with the gearbox. It appears that Volkswagon engineers made a very basic design error in the gearbox wherin a component breaks and wrecks the entire gearbox. The cost of a replacement can be more that the value of the car. Another well documented complaint is with the rear axel bushes - depending on where you go to get these replaced it can cost from £90 to £350. Dont get ripped off with mechanics claiming that this is a big job requiring the axel to be removed - its a relatively simple job for a skilled mechanic (who has the right tools) and should cost no more than £90 to replace the two rear bushes. Another common issue is with erratic tick-over and engine cutting out - this can cost loads to get repaired and most mechanics will baffle you with talk about MAF sensors and rubbish when a good service will resolve the issue without the need for expensive sensor repairs. The biggest eye opener for me was when i tried to trade my car for another and found that the trade value was £500 from a number of dealers. My car is immaculate inside and out with a full MOT and this was a real eye opener. Id rather drive it until the engine falls out of it rather than be ripped off by NI car dealers. Happy Motoring!!

2004 Volkswagen Golf Diesel Manual Hatchback by Lupo • 26th April 2012
I had a mark 4 golf 100 bhp tdi and it was one of the best cars I ever had. It was handy run and insurance wasn't to bad either. Running costs weren't that expensive. Overall I thought it a good car and I would buy another one.

Very good car, very quick, reliable and can transport the children. Done 60000 miles with no issues. Can be expensive to run high road tax and insurance but its a GTI so have to expect that. Looks are good on 18" wheels, leather interior and sunroof

2001 Volkswagen Golf Petrol Manual Family Car by mikey • 15th January 2012
My first (and last) Golf.
Multitudr of faults with mark 4 golfs.
When first bought I had to repace the front anti roll bar bushes (£££)
Then the driver side electric window broke (££)
Then one of the front springs broke, while inspecting this the other was noted to be near broken (£££)
The car started running like a pig - cutting out and erratic tick-over
the started motor started sticking on -
the door handles broke on both front doors
then a rear axel bush went (£££)
the wipers wont switch off sometimes and when they do the stop halfway up the windscreen
interior lights stopped working

So much for Volkswagen reilability :(

2009 Volkswagen Polo Petrol Manual 5 speed Hatchback by Mark • 20th December 2011
This car has been all it has needed for be for my first car, I have been over the moon with it! Yes the car by default is standard and may be basic, however I completely love it, it gets me to where I need to go, it handles very very well in all conditions, I find the clutch very soft and laid back, very easy to town drive and sit on the clutch. I find it perfect for going to University and into town. The 1.2 ltr petrol is a slight bit weak, however is enough to get me by, It cruises nicely around 60. Despite being basic inside I find it comfortable and roomy, plenty of room with up to 4 passengers and 5 doors. I really like this car! has been perfect for what I have needed to do!

VW Beetle Delight to Drive!

2009 Volkswagen Beetle Petrol Manual 5 speed Convertible by Hazel • 20th December 2011
I had owned a Cream VW Beetle for just under two years now. What can I say I love this car, I love how it drives, how it looks, how it feels, how its very comfortable and how it has a personality. The icing on the cake is taking the roof down and going for a sail on the nice day (when we get one). Typical of a VW in efficiency roughly getting 45+ to the gallon. It doesn't have very much space in the back, it sometimes can be a struggle to have four passengers (depending on size). I find the engine has enough power, the 1.6 ltr petrol is perfect for popping to the shops in and around town, the slight downside to this is the smallish boot. All in all I really love driving this car and hope to keep it for years yet!
