2015 Peugeot 508 Diesel Automatic Estate by Pug305 • 7th October 2020
A review of a 2015 Peugeot 508 2.0 SW in top spec GT trim (Not GTline, take note that GT line is a significant step below GT in Peugeot trim levels). Unfortunately as a long term Peugeot devotee i only kept this car for 6 months, it just didnt feel like big peugeots of old. Coming from a 406 a car that provided one of the most comfortable seats and drive the 508 GT has joined the trend of its German rivals and fitted massive 19” rims to create a sporty drive. I will concede that it handles like it is on rails and feels very sure footed and confidence inspiring. However this is a big french car, the raison d’etre for big peugeots is to focus on comfort which this car sadly lacked. Potholes jarred through the cabin with violent thuds. The 508 is superb on a motorway but incompatible with the patch work quilt that is all the other roads here in northern ireland. Perhaps fitting smaller wheels from a lower model would help but the 508 does not match the supple ride comfort of a 406. In other regards though the aisin warner automatic gearbox is very smooth shifting and is always in the right gear not ponderous like some automatics fitted in older big french cars. In terms of reliability I would recommend the 508, the 2.0 HDi is Peugeots own engine and been an evolution from their old XUD. The same engine is used in various Fords and Citroens, there are no massive issues with this engine keep it serviced and change the timing belt it should provide reliable service. The rest of the car is very solid feeling, definitely a big step up for Peugeot, great materials everywhere proper full grain leather seats in the GT model. Storage space up front has some unusual quirks in that it is limited, and the glovebox is small. The 508 then, a good solid effort from Peugeot just be aware the GT model is very much oriented to sporty dynamics rather than comfort.
